TOY OR NOVELTY HAT

TOY OR NOVELTY HAT
Irvin W. Schmahl and Earl H. Schmahl, both of Box 233, Madison Lake, Minn.
Filed July 21, 1959

This invention relates generally to toys and novelties for the use and enjoyment of young people, and the primary object of our invention is to provide a toy or novelty hat which will not only be entertaining to youngsters but which will also be educational at least to some extent.

A further object of the invention is to provide a hat or helmet to be worn on the head of the user and associated with which is a planetary element connected by an extensible, spring retracted tether to the hat but adapted to be driven and motivated into an orbital path by a rolling, rotating movement of the head about the upright axis of the wearer's neck. Thus the hat may simulate a space station from which is launched a satellite to travel in orbit about said station, said satellite being, of course, the planetary element before mentioned and which normally will rest in a centered position atop the hat but which is placed into orbit by movement of the head as also stated. Since said planetary element is normally retracted to its centered position atop the hat by action of the spring biased tether or flexible cord connecting the element to the hat the diameter of the orbit into which the element is flung will be determined by the vigor with which the head is moved to maintain said element in its "flying" condition. This not only places a premium upon the vigor or dexterity of the head movements, as is necessary to maintain the interest of young people in such toys, but the action as a whole will serve to teach the user something of the nature and effects of centrifugal forces, by varying the head movement the satellite bay be caused to travel in other than circular orbits about the hat, teaching the user and his companions the differences between the terms apogee and perigee as just two examples of the technical terminology brought into common usage by the recent advances in space exploration and rocket travels.

FLUID-FILLED NECK EXERCISER

FLUID-FILLED NECK EXERCISER
Charles P. Forrest, Sr. Mobile Ala. and John L. Stump, Fairhope, Ala.
Filed Jan. 19, 1990

The fluid filled neck exerciser includes an annulus filled with a fluid such as water and/or air and a head support device. The head support device has attachment members allowing the removable attachment of the annuls, the head support device including adjustment structure allowing adjustment of the size of the head support device for heads of differing sizes. The annulus may be selectively filled with a desired amount of fluid and with the device placed on the head of the user, the head may be rotated to perform exercises such as rehabilitation therapy or muscle development. The fluid filled neck exerciser provides exercise for the entire cervical musculature by movement in predetermined patterns.

Editor's note: While the neck has many patents dedicated to its exercise, this one is notable for its detailed examination of which muscles are exercised and how.

EXERCISING APPARATUS

EXERCISING APPARATUS
John H. Catron, Willow Glen, Calif.
Application March 19, 1935

  • It is one object of the invention to provide exercising apparatus for the several muscles of the body, particularly those of the head, neck and back.
  • It is also an object of the invention to provide an apparatus of the character indicated that is mountable on the head of the user and rendered operable by movement thereof.
  • Another object of the invention is to provide an exerciser of the character indicated so constructed and arranged that no material friction may develop between the head of the user and the apparatus when the same is in use.
  • Still another object of the invention is to provide an exerciser of the character indicated wherein the reaction forces developed between the exerciser and the head of the user are applied to the head on a plane normal to the vertical axis of rotation of the head and a substantial distance below the top of the head.
  • Finally it is an object of the invention to provide an exerciser of the character indicated that will be economical to manufacture, simple in form and construction, that may be quickly and easily applied to and removed from the head, that consists of few parts, and that is strong, durable, and highly efficient in its practical application.

HEADGEAR FOR POSTURE CORRECTION

HEADGEAR FOR POSTURE CORRECTION
Harold E. Kuss, Lock Haven Pa.
Application April 10, 1943
  • The objects of the present invention are to provide an improved apparatus for posture correction, as well as a game or pastime; to embody in it a combination of parts making different degrees of difficulty so as to afford various degrees of achievement as an incentive to progress.
  • The apparatus consists of a set of nesting head coverings adapted to be strapped on the wearer's head and having sockets of various sizes in which balls or other fairly heavy objects may be carried or balanced with varying degrees of difficulty.
