SYNTHETIC FECAL FLUID COMPOUND

SYNTHETIC FECAL FLUID COMPOUND
Richard S. Yeo, Dunwoody; Debra N. Welchel, Alpharetta, both of Georgia
Assignee: Kimberly-Clark Corporation, Neenah, Wis.
Filed Jun. 1, 1993

The present invention relates to a synthetic fecal fluid compound which has an improved dewatering rate thereby making it more useful than existing materials for testing and other procedures where fecal matte is involved. One particular area of usefulness is with respect to the development of personalcare devices such as diapes, training pants and incontinence garments which serve to collect and contain fecal matter.

Many companies, such as the assignee of record, expend large sums of money in the development of and improvement in personal care products including diapers, training pants and incontinence garments. One of the primary criteria in the development of such products is their ability to collect and contain body fluids including urine and fecal matter. While it is often the case that end-of-term development of a new or improved product involves actual experimental consumer testing, much of the initial testing is done on a bench scale in the laboratories. In such situations it is not practical to use actual body fluids. As a result, synthetic materials and substitutes are used. Strange as it may seem, materials used in the past have included mashed potatoes, brownie mix, peanut butte and pumpkin pie filing. In fact the need for such a material is great enough that a synthetic formulation has been commercially produced and sold. SiliClone Studio of Valley Forge, Pa. has marketed a synthetic fecal fluid solid under the trademark FECLONE.

One problem in the use of the previously mentioned materials is their inability to mimic the actual material. Babies, as an example, excrete fecal matter which varies over a wide range of viscosities despite the fact that the water content stays fairly constant. This variance in viscosity/consistency is often due to the babies' diets, health and stage of development. ...

...One major problem with synthetic fecal compounds and their substitutes is the fact that they release their water content or dewater too rapidly. Despite the apparent simplicity of personal care products, their actual structures are very complex. Their ability to absorb and retain body fluids is critically dependent upon the interaction with test fluid and compounds. As a result, the more inaccurate the properties are of the test fluids and compounds, the more inexact will be the testing within the lab. This in turn results in the need for more experimental use testing, higher costs and longer time periods for development. It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a synthetic fecal fluid compound. It is another object of the present invention to provide a synthetic fecal fluid compound with a greater ability to retain water and therefore have a slower dewatering rate.

Editor's note: No drawing of the synthetic fecal fluid compound was provided.

PERFUME DISPENSER

PERFUME DISPENSER
Milton B. Seligman, Philadelphia, Pa.
Application July 9, 1949

The present invention has to do with a perfume dispenser and is concerned primarily with a dispenser that is made as the replica of a live figure.

At the present time, members of the female sex which comprise the large majority of the users of perfume are desirous of having the perfume available in a dispenser which presents an attractive appearance when exposed to view on a dressing table. Following this trend the present invention has in view as its foremost objective the provision of a perfume dispenser which takes the form of the representation of a live figure.

While it is possible and entirely practical to simulate almost any live figure in producing such a dispenser, the invention has particularly in mind the figure of a woman.

It is of course, necessary to provide a discharge opening together with a removable closure for the opening. Thus another object is to provide, in a perfume dispenser of the type indicated, a live figure having a mouth which is fashioned to constitute the discharge opening.

In providing a closure for the discharge opening, the invention proposes the use of an element which blends in with the figure; thus, with the dispenser taking the form of a woman, the closure for the discharge opening takes the form of a cigarette which is adapted to function as a plug for the discharge opening.

ARM SUPPORT

ARM SUPPORT
Raymond C. Fuschetti, Hingham, Mass.
Filed Apr. 6, 1959

The present invention relates in general to arm supports and more particularly concerns a novel article of manufacture for supporting the upper arms in a generally horizontal position. The support is light weight, relatively easy to fabricate, low in cost, and especially useful for relieving arm fatigue of a woman who styles her own hair.

For a number of years, home permanent wave kits have been very popular with many women because attractive hair styling may be obtained at relatively low cost. However, the time required for a woman to complete a home permanent is considerable since each curl must be individually formed by appropriately inserting a curler. As a result, the arms remain extended above the shoulders for long periods of time and become extremely tired. In addition, a large number of time-consuming movements are required to grasp the individual curlers from a dressing table and instert them into the hair.

Accordingly, the present invention contemplates and has as an important object reducing the arm fatigue of a woman styling her own hair.

Another object of the invention is to provide means helpful in reducing the time-motion product in connection with styling one's hair by reducing the extent of arm motion involved in transferring pin curlers from a receptacle to the hair.

It is still another object of the invention to achieve the preceding objects with a low-cost light-weight structure of simple form.

TOY OR NOVELTY HAT

TOY OR NOVELTY HAT
Irvin W. Schmahl and Earl H. Schmahl, both of Box 233, Madison Lake, Minn.
Filed July 21, 1959

This invention relates generally to toys and novelties for the use and enjoyment of young people, and the primary object of our invention is to provide a toy or novelty hat which will not only be entertaining to youngsters but which will also be educational at least to some extent.

A further object of the invention is to provide a hat or helmet to be worn on the head of the user and associated with which is a planetary element connected by an extensible, spring retracted tether to the hat but adapted to be driven and motivated into an orbital path by a rolling, rotating movement of the head about the upright axis of the wearer's neck. Thus the hat may simulate a space station from which is launched a satellite to travel in orbit about said station, said satellite being, of course, the planetary element before mentioned and which normally will rest in a centered position atop the hat but which is placed into orbit by movement of the head as also stated. Since said planetary element is normally retracted to its centered position atop the hat by action of the spring biased tether or flexible cord connecting the element to the hat the diameter of the orbit into which the element is flung will be determined by the vigor with which the head is moved to maintain said element in its "flying" condition. This not only places a premium upon the vigor or dexterity of the head movements, as is necessary to maintain the interest of young people in such toys, but the action as a whole will serve to teach the user something of the nature and effects of centrifugal forces, by varying the head movement the satellite bay be caused to travel in other than circular orbits about the hat, teaching the user and his companions the differences between the terms apogee and perigee as just two examples of the technical terminology brought into common usage by the recent advances in space exploration and rocket travels.

ANIMAL ATTACHMENT PROVIDING ARTIFICIAL HORNS

ANIMAL ATTACHMENT PROVIDING ARTIFICIAL HORNS
Richard E. Ayres, Woodlake, Calif.
Application July 22, 1957

The present invention pertains to attachments for animals and more particularly to the mounting of an artificial attachment outwardly extended from the head of an animal for the purpose of simulating horns.

It is sometimes difficult for rodeo producers to acquire steers with horns for their performances and contests. However, it is essential that steers with horns be provided if roping and throwing are to be practiced. Horns are also required for other events. For example, if the rodeo introduces "wild cow milking" then one cowboy tries to hold the "wild cow" still by its horns while another cowboy attempts the milking.

Raising steers with horns is quite expensive, however, because of the special care which must be given to the training of the horns. Ironically, horned steers soon outlive their usefulness as top rodeo stock. After that they have little market value since ordinarily, their meat is too tough for beef. Thus the rodeo producer generally must buy at a high price and sell at a low price. The difficulty and expense involved in acquiring horned steers has been so great as to reduce the number of rodeos that can be produced.

Wrestling steers by their horns is also somewhat objectionable from humane consideration. The steer is thrown by sharply twisting its neck using the horns somewhat like handlebars. This obviously hurts the steer and causes it to stiffen its legs and pull back or drag making it more difficult to throw.

Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide an attachment for mounting artificial horns on an animal.

ACCESSORY RECEPTACLE

ACCESSORY RECEPTACLE
Thomas F. Humphreys, Inventor

The present invention relates to novelty type receptacles and more particularly to a receptacle adapted for mounting to the temple of a pair of eyeglasses.

A large segment of the population currently wears eyeglasses and many of them allow the lenses of their eyeglasses to become smudged and dirty over prolonged periods of time. Various authoritative sources advise that such dirty lenses cause eyestrain and detract from the beneficial effect obtainable from clean lenses. Further, an individual who allows his glasses to remain dirty while wearing them may encounter an emergency situation where the reduced light reaching his eyes causes deleterious effects that would have otherwise been averted.

During the present time, several manufacturers market lens tissue having special treating materials therein for cleaning eyeglasses, the most popular being a silicon-treated eyeglass tissue marketed under the trademark "Sight Savers" and manufactured by the Dow-Corning Corporation. However, it has been the practice of eyeglass tissue manufacturers to package the tissue in bulky and awkward containers thereby defeating the manufacturer's intention of making the packaged tissue convenient for most eyeglass wearers. Individuals not using such specially treated tissue frequently utilize bathroom tissue which has a tendency to leave a film streak across the lenses. This causes irritating effects to the wearer.

The present invention takes the form of a simple and conveniently mounted receptacle connected to a selected temple of a pair of eyeglasses. The receptacle includes a cylindrical housing having rolled treated tissue contained therein. A slit is formed in the wall of the housing which permits withdrawal of the tissue as desireed. Thus, by utilizing the present invention, the eyeglass wearer has treated tissue available at all times.

WIG THEFT ALARM
Charles K. Cochran, Rte. 1, Box 165, Cornelius Oregon
Filed June 28 1965
  • This invention relates to a wig theft alarm.
  • In view of the demand now prevalent for ladies' wigs or hair pieces, it is customary for shops to display a plurality of such wigs for selection by the customer. Such wigs customarily are removably fitted on mannequins, and since they are readily removable a great loss is incurred through shoplifting. A primary objective of the present invention therefore is to provide an alarm system associated with a mannequin-mounted wig which is capable of alerting the shop owner when a wig is being wrongfully removed from a mannequin.

True Secret Origin of the Exotic Patents Archive

Here is the True Secret Origin Story of the Exotic Patents Archive, in the words of the person who rescued it from potential oblivion, Donna Kossy:

I do not know much about Edward D. O'Brian (Attorney at Law in Patent, trademark & Related matters, deceased), but I do know that like me, he was a connoisseur of weirdness.

I'd been first in line at his estate sale, intent on scooping up a trove of free energy, borderland science, occult and psychic healing books for my online bookselling business. When I got home, a document fell out of a book entitled, "Exotic Patents." It was a letter, dated 1991, from the newly retired Edward D. O'Brian to the publisher of the book. In the letter, Mr. O'Brian explained that From Jan. 1, 1955 to the late 1980s, he had accumulated a series of patent collections and that he had given the collections the following titles:

1. Historical
2. Hysterical
3. Mechanical Perpetual Motion
4. Magnetic Perpetual Motion Type Motors
5. Unapproved Medical
6. Psychographs
7. Miscellaneous Borderline Subject Matter

He wondered whether the publisher was interested in the book he was in the process of writing. (From all indications, this book was never completed.)

At the sale, I had viewed a shelf full of notebooks about which I was told erroneous information, and in my purchasing frenzy was unable to discern their import. But upon reading the letter, I knew I had to return to the sale the next day (when everything would be half-off) and get my hands on the notebooks, which I now realized were part of the patent collection. I couldn't help myself. Hence, I am now in possession of a large plastic tub crammed full of unusual patents photocopies, a partial manuscript, and miscellaneous patent-related papers and articles.

She began the work of presenting this archive in her blog, Hysterical Patents. This great work has now been passed on to me, and I hope to do honor to the memory of Edward D. O'Brian.
